Braintree Payment Gateway, ECI flag

We got an email from Braintree (our payment gateway provider) about changes to ECI flag for vaulted transactions. Do you know if our transaction already marked with "recurring"? Also do you know if this require anymore action from our end or Zuora?

---------- Forwarded message ----------

Due to changes in card processing standards from Visa and Mastercard, we are required to change the flag sent on vaulted transactions from “recurring” to “ecommerce” unless:

  1. The transaction is associated with a subscription (http://app.paypal-now.com/e/er?utm_campaign=BT_NA_Merchant_Outreach_ECI_Flags_201705&utm_medium=emai...) triggered by our recurring billing engine or
  2. The merchant has passed recurring as true (http://app.paypal-now.com/e/er?utm_campaign=BT_NA_Merchant_Outreach_ECI_Flags_201705&utm_medium=emai...) when creating the transaction via the API.

ECI flags are indicators to the issuing banks regarding the transaction type they are processing. Visa and Mastercard mandate that the “recurring” flag only be used for transactions associated with a subscription billing model. The card associations define subscriptions as multiple transactions processed at predetermined intervals, not to exceed one year between transactions, with notifications to cardholders before the charges (see Visa rules here (http://app.paypal-now.com/e/er?utm_campaign=BT_NA_Merchant_Outreach_ECI_Flags_201705&utm_medium=emai...) and Mastercard rules here) (http://app.paypal-now.com/e/er?utm_campaign=BT_NA_Merchant_Outreach_ECI_Flags_201705&utm_medium=emai...) .

If you are using a subscription model outside of Braintree’s tools, you can pass the “recurring” ECI flag via the API (http://app.paypal-now.com/e/er?utm_campaign=BT_NA_Merchant_Outreach_ECI_Flags_201705&utm_medium=emai...) . If you pass the recurring flag and you are not using a true subscription billing model, you will be flagged for noncompliance and subject to card association fines.

If you have any questions, please reach out to accounts@braintreepayments.com.

Regards,
The Braintree Team

Re: Braintree Payment Gateway, ECI flag

Yes, your payment transactions from Zuora  are already marked as Recurring = TRUE since they are associated with subscriptions.

Below is an example of the request string we send out to Braintree on every payment. You can see the ECI flag "recurring : true" at the end:

RequestString: {Request = [tokenId={"xxxxxxxxxxxxx":"xxxxxxx"}]}, {Request = [{"paymentMethodToken":"xxxxxxx", "amount": "0.00", "orderId": "P-xxxxxxxx", "merchantAccountId": "xxxxxx", "recurring": "true"}]}

There is no further action needed on your end.
